Fern Street

Well, we scrubbed, but those kitchen walls… At least it looks like we put forth some effort. Meanwhile, all this prep for the arrival of the in-laws got me looking at our place more objectively. What do these rooms and all this stuff say about us?

In my travels I have stayed at houses of friends and strangers and I’ve concluded that you never really know a person until you’ve seen where they live. This is not to say that a dirty toilet bowl is all you need to know about a person. But that tidbit of information does say something, doesn’t it?
One of my favorite things to do is something I call Locale Photojournaling. That is, I take photos of the details of an environment that I think tell the story of that neighborhood, building, or home. For the longest time, I have taken photos of rooms I have slept in - hotel rooms during travel, apartments I’ve rented, friends houses I’ve visited and etc. It was only after I moved to California that I got interested in photographing other people’s homes. I was sitting alone in the studio apartment of my then lover when I realized that almost everything I knew of him could be found in that very room. The place where he wrote music and the Wurlitzer on which he wrote it; the extensive CD collection; the old VHS tapes, his shoes, the tattered pants he wore until they were falling apart, the books on the floor… You get the idea. Later when I looked through the collection of pictures I titled El Ay, I thought about things that were not there in that studio, mainly him, and that spoke loudest of all.

Today, I looked around our house and began clicking away. I will leave this collection of our locale for you to decide what it says about us.

Your house tells me that I should definitely come out and visit. Actually, it was the gnome who told me but he asked me not to tell.

I laugh because I see lots of things in these pics that wont be out too much longer. August will be a busy girl! heehee. (Funny what women who are mothers see in pics of homes!)
