I Used To Answer My Mail

11 · Dec · 2006

When I first started writing this public private reality I answered all my emails. All of them. Even when I was in Romania. Even when I didn’t own a computer. I did this happily, with a vivid memory of an unanswered letter to Ronald Reagan in the corner of my broken heart. If you read my bio it nearly swears on my good shoes that I will answer all the emails too. There is a word for this promise. That word is “lie.”

I really want to reply to all the emails I get, especially since most of them are from friends that I miss and enjoy communicating with. But these days I consider myself lucky to know where my lip balm is and even luckier if I use it. It’s cause for celebration if I have a shower and am wearing something that does not have cookie smear on it. And when Mike and I go out and drink alcohol and socialize, it is like, better than having Sean Combs throw me a birthday party.

Speaking of which, thanks to Byron, we did go out to Mercury Lounge last month to see Richard Swift perform. I wore painful boots, drank two adult beverages, and sang along with zero embarrassment. If you knew me in my 20’s you wouldn’t see the significance in that. But oh what one $6 drink can do to me now!

Whilst listening and swaying to Richard Swift I answered every email filling my Inbox. Each reply began with proclamations of love, inserted thoughtful meandering questions about religion that divides us and ended with polite curses about my lack of comprehension for appreciation of the cold hard facts. Each Pretend Reply was as stupid as that last sentence but all came with a Richard Swift Soundtrack.

All of this to say I am thinking of you Jeff, Kim, Gabi, Jake, Natasha and Firas. Even if I am too busy getting through the day to write back.
