Where My Creativity Used To Go To Get Pummeled
15 · Jan · 2007
Back in the day when I looked for validation in the eyes of record executive dogs and ad agency pansies, I sent out my resume with the the most eccentric cover pages. But they almost always got me that first interview.

For this one, the box goes in the center of the page and you gather a bunch of rocks, write "excuses" people often hear for poor performance on small scraps of paper and wrap those excuses around the rocks, securing them with string. You pour the rocks into the envelope along with your resume. This one got me 3 interviews at EMI.

I also used to use this image (quite illegal, I suppose)
The headline said something about knowing when NOT to quit.

And the caption below was:
Stu Sutcliff left the Beatles in April 1961.
I also once got an interview by submitting this cover letter over samples of my writing:
To Whom It May Concern:
No one is watching. Put this packet in your bag. Take it home. It’s our secret. Actually, I won’t even know you took it. Seriously. It’s yours; you earned it.
Haven’t you wanted something just for you? A little escape, a new, holistic drug that will make you happier, smarter and in control…
After all, these people think they know you, but they don’t, do they? There’s this whole section of you, a vital part in fact, that nobody speaks to. You’re like a machine. You come in, get your daily dose, talk to the correct players, do the thing you do. Then you go home, just in time to do something resembling sleep, and before you can say “kaka” you’re sitting back in the weekly meeting and all you can do is scream inside your head something like this:
“This cannot be real. How the hell did I fall so far into this pit of mediocrity and who do I need to kill first to get out?”
You’re right. You are better than this. And just this once, give yourself a break. You are now staring at an open door, no chains attached. Let go. Publish me. Live
Respectfully,
Penny René
People are funny. And I was especially desperate for a job in the 90's.
These days, I suppose I'd have to send a short film clip of my ass to get noticed.
