Wanted: Wife

26 · Feb · 2007

In 2004 I saw this billboard in Los Angeles at the corner of LaBrea and Melrose.

billboard

I called the number.

This is what I heard:

Hi, my name is Mark and, yes, it's true: I'm looking for a wife. Now, you may think it’s crazy to put up a billboard but I'm very sincere.

I live just a short distance from Los Angeles in the north end of San Diego. I'm very down to earth, I'm a lot of fun, I like to travel. I enjoy concerts, restaurants, and I also sing karaoke. And I have a crazy sense of humor. I also have a great heart.

I've been in California for 16 years; before that I lived in Hawaii and Florida, and I grew up in Wisconsin.

If you're tired of phony Los Angeles men and you want to meet a real special single guy, leave me your name, your telephone number, and I'll call you back. Thanks and have a great day.

Mark said he called me back because my message was witty. I have no idea what I said. We went on 2 dates. He was quite a bit older than me. He drove a red convertible sportscar. He was very nice but I felt absolutely nothing while we were talking except, “I hope this goes down as the weirdest thing I have ever done to meet a nice man.”

It was.
