In Like Flynn
7 · May · 2007
I've been unpacking my books today and I'm loving it. Like a walk down Memory Lane, but without all the people from my past whispering bad things about me as I walk by.

There are certain possessions that tell a lot about the person. Shoes, of course. Women know that one. (Note to all men reading: Don't wear "boat" shoes ever again) Collections. Guys who collect comic books will always be up for seeing the new Spiderman flick. Collections of beer cans or liquor bottles - I bet he has a beer gut or can't seem to "relax" unless he's drunk.
But books - books are the window to the soul. Romance novels belong to high maintenance women. Biographies tend to be a favorite of lawyerly types who aspire to politics. You get the idea. Man, I'm looking at my shelves and I'm thinking that if you scanned these titles, you'd learn a lot more about me than I can ever write here. So.
I'm going to list some of my books and I want to hear what you think is the story behind them. Later in the week, I'll tell you the truth. I'd like to see how right I am about my theory.
Earth Prayers
The Penguin Book of Rock In Roll Writing
Japan in A Nutshell Volume I & II
The Little Prince
Things I Meant To Say To You When We Were Old
Never Alone
Which Lie Did I Tell?
The Crying of Lot 49
Transylvania History & Reality
Hamlet
Dubliners
The Paris Review
Pocket English / Italian Dictionary
A Happy Death
The Beauty Archive - Women
Pick a couple. What do they say about me?
Better yet, what's on YOUR bookshelf?

Not sure about you, but The Little Prince is what I use when I need a little recalibration on life. Or a good cry. If nothing else, it says you have excellent taste in literature.

I'm thinking "Never Alone" is about being self sufficient as a woman, and "Transylvania History and Reality" is from the time you spent living in Romania. I think your books say that you seek to learn more of others cultures, prayers, cities so you may grow and find more peace in the world, and also so you may find peace within yourself.
A few books I brought with me to Omaha are "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children's Vaccines" (that's pretty obvious), "Baby Catcher", and "Blue Like Jazz".
Wow. I feel like I just wrote something for a high school essay/ journal. Haha.

That is a really interesting collection.
Let me see... books on my bookshelf include:
Pride and Prejudice,
Long Dark Teatime of the Soul,
and Assassin's Apprentice... :)

I think your list says that you have exceptional taste in literature... well all except the English/Italian Dictionary. That just says you are either Italian and an extremely annoying woman (I'm Italian, I can say that, dammit), or you wanted to go to Italy or still wish to.
Oh, and that you like pasta... I know I do.
I do however think you are missing Kerouac and Hunter on your list. But gloriously delicious choices none the less.

The Little Prince IS the most telling one. And Never Alone is actually a book by Joseph Girzone about a modern look at Christianity. I don't subscribe to that religion, but Girzone is a genius and his books are inspiring.
But the English Italian Dictionary was left at my house years ago by a former boyfriend. (Hi Roberto!)
