No, that is not a typo.
Last night Mike and I took August out for a stroll in her red wagon and when we got back to the house our neighbor, Jim, from across the street stepped onto the sidewalk to say hello. His wife came outside too and we all stood there talking like a bunch of adults. Like we had lives and were maybe even friends. Like we knew what the hell we were doing and everything was perfectly OK.
It has been a very long time since I stood outside my house and chatted with neighbors whom I like. To be honest, I think the last time that happened, Ronald Reagan was in the White House.
Last weekend when we were all unloading the truck several neighbors took time to meet us and tell us what a great area we have moved into. They also offered the use of their tools, a cup of sugar and even help running electricity to the garage. During these odd gestures, children played basketball in driveways, a few people polished their shiny cars and the smell of freshly cut grass hung in the air. I was beginning to get very suspicious when Jim mentioned that cocktails and beers were always available at his place.
Ahh-HA!
Finally, a place we can call home and actually believe it.
