Snapshots of My Former Self

21 · Feb · 2007

In light of my last entry I thought I would post photos of these past lives. A sort of Show and Tell of my life before now.

This is me and my friend Candy in an underground bar called Culture Club in Sighisoara Romania. I think it was April or May of 2003. Candy is not Romanian. She's a friend from Oklahoma who joined me during my last month long stay in Romania. That night she sang karaoke that Alanis Morissette song You Oughtta Know and won the night's contest.
We drank beer and walked home with our friends. It goes down as one of my best memories.

Candy is married and lives in Spokane with her daughter, Ella Jolie. Her husband, Martin is from South Africa and he's currently serving in US military in Iraq.

This is me and my friend Tony at a bar called the Greenhouse in Nashville. This was probably in the summer of 2000. He's from Birmingham Alabama and he was one of the many housemates I've had over the years. Tony was studying to be a psychologist. He also wrote angry songs on his guitar and punched a leather punching bag in our basement. We never dated because after we became friends, we both talked so much there was no room for romance. Plus, he liked psychotic chics with substance abuse problems. Lucky for him he later married a bass player named Sarah who showed no signs of mental instability or craving for pills. (giggle)

Here is a photo of me and my dear friend David in Savannah, GA.

David is from Scotland and he was one of my best friends for about eight years. We took this trip to Savannah with my neighbor Crazy Karen when he was visiting me in the states in 2001, I think. David played Rupert to my Julia for a long time. He made a dinner jacket out of drapes while staying with me and he also sang an entire Cranberries CD to me once just to be annoying. The last time I heard from him he was in Glasgow finishing his student teaching to become a math teacher.

This is Crazy Karen and I one night before we were going out for drinks.

Karen is the only woman I've ever known who decided to put on weight just to see what she would look like. During the time she lived next door to me she went from a size 2 to a size 6. However, that is not the reason we called her crazy.

That is me and the guys I worked with at the bike shop in Oklahoma. Steve, Charlie and Carl. Steve, who is the store owner gave me a job and a place to live during a time when I was stranded between OKC and California. At the time, I was the only female working at a bicycle shop in Oklahoma City. The bikng community is close-knit and I had no idea what I was getting into. I hated pricing merchandise and taking inventory of tires. But I loved eating dirty mexican food for lunch and being on the inside of the elitist biking world there. Miss you guys!

OK more later. Better stuff. This was just a smidgen.

Have been watching this for a while now in your writing. Are you grieving? Seriously-- are you alright?

Mildly concerned, but not overly-concerned until you say so!

okay, i know that 2 in one night is a little over-the-top, but I'm on my 3rd glass of French-bought red wine, so..

just wanted to let you know that i can tell the 'old' penny you know and love is still here. you have a vibrant spirit and love of life that is obvious with you now in NJ with your man and cutie kiddo.

and the pictures you have to prove it makes it all the more obvious :)

Thanks. I'm fine, though! Just working through the details of my life! (:
